Where Psychology meets Theology
John 4:14
The Aqueduct, offers integrative Christian counseling to adults and adolescents, using well established and researched psychological tools, that have been shown to be effective with many symptoms, conditions and diagnoses, such as depression, anxiety and addiction. Such psychological techniques are integrated with biblical principles, offering a holistic approach to counseling.
At the Aqueduct we believe that with Christ all things are possible (Matt 19:26), which includes the healing from and the management of mental illness, wherein one can have life and life more abundantly (John 10:10).
Leonie graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with a master's in biblical counseling; equipping Leonie with a distinct ability to combine tried and tested psychological tools with sound biblical principles and teaching; with the understanding that all wisdom is ultimately from God (Prob 2:6), and real and lasting change happens through the grace of God; as without God one can do nothing (John 15:5).
As well as providing individual counseling, Leonie also works within a psychiatric hospital, equipping her with the knowledge, background and expertise to work with more acute symptoms and cases such as suicidal ideation, bipolar episodes and psychosis.
Leonie specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is based on the notion that the battle with depression and related disorders ultimately is won in the mind first, concurrent with the biblical understanding that one is transformed by the renewing of the mind (Rom 12:2). CBT has been shown to be effective with most symptoms, conditions and diagnoses.
Leonie is also certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), a specialist type of therapy for the treatment of trauma and the subsequent effects thereof, such as PTSD.
Leonie’s background in pharmacy allows her to assist clients in gaining greater insight into how their medications work and benefits to their use.
John 10:10
"The term cognitive comes from the Latin "cognoscere", meaning "to recognize." The point of cognitive behavioral therapy is to form a clear idea of your own thoughts, attitudes and expectations. The goal is to reveal and change false and distressing beliefs, because it is often not only the things and situations themselves that cause problems, but the importance that we attach to them."
National library of medicine
"EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories."
Emdria
Integrative Christian counseling is a holistic approach to counseling that seeks to consider mind, body and spirit. It seeks to integrate biblical principles with psychological concepts with the understanding that the word of God stands superior; and acts as the foundation upon which everything else must build.
